Toay was an absolutely stunning 72° sunny day. We got out for a bit of a walk today. I had an appointment with a cardiovascular doctor and he said the several concerns they had were moot and I was doing just fine. I won at nickel bingo.

You would think this would be enough to pull me out of my crud/funk. It might’ve been had my funk not grown deeper when I fell off the bed and smashed my face on the floor Saturday morning. Busted my nose up as well as my lip. Had to call the EMS. A pretty embarrassing day. My life has gone from Da Weirdest Parade to Da Trash Truck Rodeo.

Summary: "See, the problem is this: in the past few weeks there's been a distressing increase in the thickness and darkness of the peach fuzz on his upper lip, to the point that it's becoming noticeable and also gross. He should be happy about it, really, because it's a sign of manhood, isn't it?"

Sometimes, not having a dad around really, really sucks. But recently acquiring a big brother does have its perks.

Reccer's Notes: As the author says, "They're brothers your honor." I love the way Steve and Dustin adopted each other in the show, and this fic feels like it could be a missing scene. The voices are spot on, and the vibes are good.

The car. To recap. Saturday, engine light came on. I went to the fix it place's website and started making an appointment to get the error read. Abandoned and figured I'd just pop in this week. Monday I got a text saying they saw I had abandoned and could they help. I texted back my plan to pop in. The response was 'fine'. Turns out that was a lie. I popped in and the not-at-all-helpful dude allowed as how they were way too busy and would need an appointment and the first one was next week. I went home and texted 'nice of you to mislead me.' The response was 'if you want an appointment Monday, I can hook you up.' I did not respond because I couldn't decide between fuck you and fuck you very much.

On my way home from that place, I pulled into the auto parts place to pick up an OBDII reader. In my mind I kind of had the parts place guy coming out to my car with his reader but they looked very busy so I sat in their parking lot and ordered one for $16 from Amazon. It will be here today. And at least I will know if my car is falling apart.

I spent some time yesterday knitting up a teddy bear but by the time I got to his neck, I was done. He's too big. So now I have some other ideas in my head to try out.

Today we have the food and beverage pre-meeting which will be short, I'm guessing and painless, I'm hoping.

I need to change my bed linen and wash it. Today.

TV. Prime has a new Scarpetta series. It starts Nicole Kidman who has always annoyed the fuck out of me. Plus it's based on books written by a woman I actually knew way back before she became a celebrity author. She was a PIA in those days and I have always assumed she is just a bigger, higher paid one now. So, I have to admit, I'm not crushed that the reviews say the series sucks. Will I watch the first episode anyway? Of course I will!

But I watched the first episode of ABC's RJ Decker and it was quite engaging.

Christian and I had a great visit and then he took me up to the unit he's working on. It's a very large unit - 1800 square feet. The woman who recently moved out was the first tenant when it was built 17 years ago. They tore it back really to the studs and it's a hot mess now. It's like a jungle of half walls and studs. It's just way too big and also claustrophobic. Also my view is way better. I was so glad to walk back into my little apartment after seeing that one. He has his work cut out for him.

He's also doing the unit of another guy here moving in next week. This guy is in his 80's driving up from Florida having all his shit shipped. He's paying Christian to get it all in and arranged in the unit. The guy has never laid eyes on Timber Ridge! He has a son living on Orcus Island which is about a 2 hour drive and then 40 minute ferry ride up the road. Closer than Florida.

One thing Christian said yesterday made me look again at parking for our baseball games in June. (He actually said that there was no fucking way we should bring a car near the stadium but that's neither here nor there.) I had looked at parking apps before, including Spot Hero, and the closest spaces available were not close at all. BUT last night, Spot Hero had spots in the football stadium garage - across the street from the baseball stadium - and I was able to secure a spot for all three games. Only $25 per game which, honestly, I think is a steal. It's going to be a bitch getting into the garage and getting out but, hey, I won't be driving - that's what I have my brother and his son for.

It is the same weekend as the World Cup so it's going to be a mad house and, honestly, I'm not even sure I believe Spot Hero. But the money is paid and we are set. I hope. The local news/internets are whipping up a gynormous frenzy about these games and the people coming to down in 2 and a half months.

Biggie's driving me nuts. He's not happy with my typing on the computer so it must be time for me to get up and do something else.

There's been a rant I have been meaning to turn into an essay for a while, but Ken White (Popehat) has done it better, so I direct you to his really well-written and referenced (though US-centric) article: The Fashionable Notion of 'Free Speech Culture' Is Justifying State Censorship, Ironically. Criticism. Is. Not. Censorship, and “Free speech culture” has a natural tendency to discount the speech rights and interests of people who criticize speech.

This is important in Europe too, not just in the US, because it's a deliberate, specific Russian infowar tactic to promote far right events at UK universities and claim censorship if anyone objects. A network based at [Cambridge] University and backed by Thiel, which it said was using the issue of free speech to “normalise white nationalism on UK campuses”. Neither Putin nor Thiel has anyone's freedom at heart, and they're all too successful at distracting people with a toddler-like notion of "freedom" where you get to say the naughty words without being told off.

This is an 800 year old play based on events 2,500 years ago in China, the first Chinese play to be translated into any European language (about 300 years ago). The Royal Shakespeare Company commissioned James Fenton to adapt it for a production about 13 years ago, and a student theatre group are putting that adaptation on at the ADC in Cambridge this week.

I went to see it last night with Charles, and also Olivia, one of my friends from Womens Blues. (We then found two of my Huskies teammates in the audience so it became an accidental hockey social.) We saw a little first-night talk beforehand from the director and some of the actors, about why they chose this play and some of their favourite lines and aspects of the characters they play. The play itself was very good, very gripping, a revenge tragedy with a very high body count and an ending I didn't quite expect.

The kind of evening that makes me remember how much I like living in this weird little city in the fens.

(and, in further "wow I love living in walking distance of the ADC" news, here's what I'm hoping to get to between now and early May:

  • Into The Woods (famous musical)
  • Olympus Unscripted (improv show on greek myths theme)
  • Chekov's Four Farces (what it says on the tin)
  • Next to Normal (musical about mental illness)
  • The Ferryman (play about the Irish Troubles)
  • Medea (musical adaptation of Euripedes play)

)

Hello, Dear Readers. I would say that not much has happened since the last time I wrote, other than writing a filler entry for 1 March, which contains the Friday Five for February, but that's not entirely true. For once, there has been a fantastic change in the weather! Yesterday and today, it has been so perfect that I actually went outside! Yesterday it was seventy, and today, it was eighty! Sadly, it will go back into the thirties next week, but with luck, after that, it will warm up again and stay warm. Regardless, I'm enjoying this while it lasts. I also had another great experience yesterday, though it started with something annoying. I tried to buy my vitamins, but the site wasn't working with NVDA. I was going to try it with Supermium, but I decided to see if Joanie could get them for me. Not only did she agree, but she did it on the same day! Now, I won't have to wait for them to come. Unfortunately, They're not on Amazon, but since the shop is literally in town, it makes things easy.

I had a bit of a scare this morning. I have a serge protector under my desk that holds my various devices. I usually put my Toughpad on the table by my bed, but this means that, when it's plugged in, the cord stretches across the floor. I stepped on it and then found that my computer wasn't charging. I'm already having issues with it to the point that I e-mailed my long-time repairman to see if he can upgrade the hard drive and either reinstall Windows 11 or install Windows 7, since I found, to my delight that the Fz M1 Mk3 can actually accept that operating system! It's working now, but I can't reset it, and after at least two days of trying to resolve the problem, I've had enough. Anyway, I noticed that Alexa didn't read my flash briefing at noon, so then, I began to wonder if perhaps the powr to that part of the house went out. But it didn't. Instead, I had accidentally pulled on the protector so it wasn't fully plugged in, explaining why my Toughpad, along with my Dell laptop, wasn't charging. Needless to say, I was thrilled. There is an external battery charger for this machine, but it costs eighty dollars, and though I do eventually want to get it, I didn't want to do so right now.

The other day, we had a new culinary adventure. Joanie made something similar to chicken nuggets. She and my nephews had them with buffalo (hot) sauce and I had them plain. They were pretty good. She also made these things called taquitos, which are basically rolled up dough with cheese, but the cheese was spicy, so I didn't eat them. No one else really liked them either. Tonight, she made quesadillas . They're okay, but they're not really my favourite thing, so I decided to finish my chicken parmesan with angel hair from the other night. Ironically, there weren't enough quesadillas for all of us anyway, so it all worked out.

I have been thinking of returning to the audio recordings that I started some years ago. I enjoy making product reviews and demonstrations, explaining how I do things being blind, and sharing my opinions on various non-political topics. At that time, I was using a site called whyp. It worked well, and the creator of the site was very kind. While I'm sure the latter is still true, sadly, the site is now inaccessible. I was unable to download my previous recordings, when I made more than one, the Upload button disappeared (they said absolutely nothing about only being able to record one file with a free account), and when I tried to subscribe to a monthly plan, it kept returning me to an annual one. Clyp, a very similar site, did that as well. I deleted my files from Whyp and began searching for a new audio home on the Internet. Finally, after asking on both Reddit and Mastodon, not to mention conversing with Perplexity on the topic, someone recommended audiopub. This is free and is completely accessible. I then felt a bit foolish, because I had created a profile (or at least a page, since they don't have proper profiles) there in January but hadn't uploaded to it. I will be changing that tonight or tomorrow, so here is the link to the main page. For some odd reason, it won't give me the link to my profile, but I'm dandylover1 there. The site is relatively new, so I guess they're still working things out.

MONDAY

Up early for coffee and breakfast before the Uber to the airport. I got there too early as usual.
After exploring the tiny Richmond airport I was chilling and reading my book when a TSA agent and explosives dog came by. I remembered to ask for a trading card and they were happy to oblige.

Here is Salem and his handler Brimo!
Untitled1.jpgUntitled.jpg

Salem must be good luck because the travel day went quite well. Both flights were on time, weather was clear, etc. Our hotel is newish and my room is HUGE, it feels luxurious! And it's a long-stay-type so there's a stovetop and full size fridge, woooo! The downside is that downtown Louisville doesn't have grocery stores, which meant Ubering or Instacart was the only realistic option. I Ubered to a Whole Paycheck and COMPLETELY forgot to use the gift card that Ms. Johnson gifted me for giving a masterclass last week *facepalm* It's ok, it will absolutely get used at some point.

Back to the hotel and unpacking, making myself hot tea and chatting with Jameson via text. There's something so satisfying about having a fridge full of lovely groceries, and a quiet evening to yourself to relax in pajamas in a big clean beautiful hotel. Moments like these really do embody what "wealth" means to me. It never fails to make me feel like a Trombone Disney Princess™.

Grateful, grateful, grateful.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TUESDAY

Woke up having NO idea where I was or what day it was. It took a second to wake up fully and remember that it's Tuesday and I'm in Louisville, haha. The side effects of frequent travel and ever-changing hotel rooms!

Went downstairs to raid hotel breakfast. They have some unusual and nice options here, like potato pancakes and overnight oats, which are uncommon at most free hotel breakfasts. But they don't have peanut butter which I find odd! Still, grabbed some bagels and coffee at least.

Working on DC Foodie Finds, packing dinner and snacks for the theater, and making plans.

RE: Louisville: Telling you all now that I do not plan to do much sightseeing here other than just walking around enjoying the general downtown. I'm about to have three weeks laid off/unpaid so I want to save money, plus I've been here before with the circus. On Wednesday I have a haircut, on Thursday we have in-ear fittings. I may visit a local market. That's about it.

RE: three week layoff: As usual I will have a LOT to do. There will be a lot of cleaning since installing new flooring kicked up dust and a lot of things were moved, plus the usual housekeeping. I also need to do taxes, which I'm filing late because I have 8-10 W2s plus a load of 1099s this year. But the biggest challenge this layoff is not having a car. I need to carefully plan Uber and Instacart usages so that I'm only making 1-2 trips per week, AND I have two gigs (a Main Street Phil day and an Easter gig) which may require rental cars. This is my first time without the car for such a long period of time.

Anyway, it was a quiet morning and afternoon. Since the pit is "weird" here plus our show is at 7pm instead of 7:30, I decided to walk over early.

Here is the weird pit. Can you tell what's unusual about it?
2.jpg

That's right, it's on two tiers! On the top "shelf" nearest the audience we have DAR, violin and woodwinds on his left, and Tim (trumpet) and I on his right. On the lower level we have the drum box smack in the middle with keys to DAR's left and horn on the right. It's odd...but I guess it works? Tim was still setting up when I got there so I scrounged around for my trunk instead, and the hotel is so close that I walked back to put that stuff away while I was at it. By the time I got back Tim was done and I could set up.

A kind of "artsy" shot of the pit. I liked the contrasting lighting from the house and the drum box, and the natural sort of one-point perspective created by the lines.
3.jpg

Sound check went fine, just some mild complaints that turned out to be pretty fixable thankfully. I had packed dinner and ate at the theater, but Ryu (violin) and Josh (Key 2) found a really good Korean place nearby so that may have to be my Foodie Find here in Louisville. After dinner I popped up to Management for my traditional opening day piece of candy. They had another surprise for us: mini Louisville Sluggers with the show logo and dates on them! How cute!
4.jpg

The evening show went well, although the sound in this theater will definitely take some getting used to.
At intermission Connor (Key 1) found an old pump organ shoved into a corner and gave it a whirl.

Also, Jameson texted to share that his parents have gotten a new puppy! A yorkiepoo I think. His name is JoJo and he's 6 1/2 years old. He belonged to another family once, but they had trouble with him barking while they were gone or something like that. But he looks cute and I hope they'll all get along well!
1.jpg

It was nice to be finished with the show 30 minutes earlier than usual! I had time to type this post up and read a little before bed :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday:
Haircut in the morning, and visiting a local bodega called Haymarket. One evening show.

Thursday: Getting fitted for in-ears in the morning. One evening show.

G'day

++ As always, even though I know it'll soon pass, daylight savings has me all fucked up.

++ Seven Seas Entertainment has been acquired by Media Do, which not only it seems the employees of Seven Seas weren't aware of this acquisition until it was announced but it seems that Media Do is going to be using their own AI translations, specifically for manga, as a means of pushing out more product at a faster rate. Although both Media Do and Seven Seas have made notices regarding the concerns, people are, rightfully, upset by this news. Seven Seas wasn't perfect by any means in regards to translations at times, but at least there were human translators. I don't know what will happen, honestly. Even if there are reassurances by Seven Seas claiming that they will still be hiring human translators there is no guarantee this will remain true further down the line. The best one can do at this point is to keep an eye on the situation. I know I will especially in regards to the upcoming volumes of danmei series that I'm assuming will not be altered since they've had translators already in place. Nevertheless, it just really fucking sucks that AI has taken over a lot of places, particularly in publishing and translations.

The Friday Five for February

(Catchup - 10 March 2025)
Hello, Dear readers. Happy first of March! You know what that means. It's time for another Friday Five! I really should have posted this on the 28th of February, as I usually do at the end of the month, but I was caught up in that beautiful music and other things. Anyway, here it is now. All of these can be found at [community profile] thefridayfive.

The Friday Five for 6 February 2026
These questions were suggested by [livejournal.com profile]that_one_girl.

1. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Child. And for some time, I wanted to be a lawyer. I changed my mind after the verdict in the O.J. Simpson case.

2. What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
I don't know.

3. What is your dream job?
Perhaps, working in crafts or being a writer.

4. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I hope not still single and here.

5. What does it take to make you happy?
In the short term, hot weather, good food and wine, documentaries, opera, going to the little house, etc. In the long term, finding a partner, buying my first (I hope of several to come) suit, and figuring out my living situation.

The Friday Five for 13 February 2026
1. Who was your first kiss?
The man with whom I lost my virginity. Both of us were vergins and curious. We were also both adults (I had just turned eighteen), since I refused to do anything as a minor. But it wasn't love, just friendship and curiosity.

2. Who is the last person you kissed?
My mother.

3. What is the story of your most romantic kiss?
I'm still waiting for it to be written. I've had kisses but none that would qualify here.

4. What is the story of your worst kiss?
I never had a bad kiss.

5. Who do you want to kiss right now?
Whom. No one living.

The Friday Five for 20 February 2026
When did you last . . .

1. Scrounge for change (couch, ashtray, etc.) to make a purchase?
I've never had to do that.

2. Visit a dentist?
Many years ago.

3. Make a needed change to your life?
I'm not sure. But I will be going back to the little house soon, and that is definitely needed.

4. Decide on a complete menu well in advance of the evening meal?
I've never done that. I've decided on a main course, but never a complete menu.

5. Spend part of the day (other than daily hygiene) totally/mostly naked?
I don't think I ever have. But as soon as I get a place of my own again, I will. That sounds like a great idea!

The Friday Five for 27 February 2026
Feelings…

1. What made you happy this week?
Nothing the week of 1 March. But on the 10th, I can say the beautiful weather yesterday and today.

2. What made you sad?
I was watching a documentary about forests and a scientist explained how her parents were loggers and destroyed the land that she is now trying to reforest. I could hear the sadness in her voice.

3. What made you angry?
Nothing that I can think of.

4. What are you looking forward to in the next week?
More great weather, though to be honest, it's supposed to get cold again by the end of the week.

5. What are you not looking forward to?
The cold returning.

So really, there isn't a lot of point in going diving into the rabbit-hole that's just opened up.

I.e. I am revising my old piece of work for the Fellows' presentations session, and I thought, why not just see if name of author of obscure feminist work cited appears in British Newspaper Archive, which at time I was writing was less in habit of habitually consulting on odd points (did not, I think, have a subscription, for one thing). As otherwise I had no info on her at all.

And, blow me down, she may only have written one book but seems to have committed the odd journalistic opinion piece, and furthermore, is listed as being one of the founders of an organisation set up by Old Suffragettes (or possibly -ists).

Which I find someone has Has Writ A Book About, as one of those women's orgs that have been condescended to by posterity as about the little dears getting together to chat, bless the ladies, and turns out to have been rather more activist in its sphere than one reckoned.

Library to which I have access has copy, but will not let me have online access to ebook for some reason, sigh.

And really, I do have other things to do (thesis to read, book to review, have been solicited to do a podcast, must try and put together a powerpoint for my talk) than dash off down to LSE to look at the archives of the org, right?

Because given the limitations on what it's for, at the moment - however the work in question will develop - it will be a sentence at best, because of time constraints.

Frustration.

The raccoons are fight-dancing, upright,
with outraged, horrible noises.
The night is illegible,
the streetlights dead staves.
You move into each orbit of darkness
like an extinction.

Time the storyteller is tired.
She begins many stories
but loses track of the endings.

What will happen to the angry raccoons?
In the morning, count the cats,
count the birds, count the worms,
count the earth.

No doubt we will find all the endings
in the end.

The landscapers never did plant those trees but I see where they have positioned one of them. No clue what happened to the other one but they also dub up all the bushes in all the raised beds. Wild. This morning, they have the replacements lined up and ready to go in. Busy!!

Volleyball was fine. It's house cleaner day. Oh, I just got a text from Christian, the designer, asking if I wanted to meet him for coffee - here - in an hour. He's bringing his car in for service. He uses the same place I do.

Saturday, when my check engine light went on, I went to their website to get an appointment but their appointment bot was not doing what I wanted it to so I abandoned and figured I'd just pop in this week. It's a very easy trip from here. Yesterday, I got a text from them saying 'I see you started to sign up for an appointment and didn't. Anything I can help you with?' So I texted back the sitch and received 'sounds like a good plan'. Christian can tell me if they are busy today :)

Years and years ago, I used to knit teddy bears. I'd make a batch and then take them to a charity. The charity changed hands and no longer wanted them so I quit making them. I had started with a pattern that was really the combination of about 3 different ones and then I refined it. They were cute bears.

At the time, [personal profile] legalmoose asked me if I'd document the pattern I was using and so I did. And put it on Ravelry. I have a bit of a backlog of monsters and decided to knit something else and then I remembered the teddy bears and that I had that pattern! Good thing, too, because I don't even have one of the bears to go by and it would have been a bitch to recreate from memory. One of the trickiest bits, I remember, was the initial cast on so that I could easily work 2 legs at one time in the round. But, last night I nailed it in one tray. Now I can't remember why it was so tricky. I didn't get that far - half the legs. More today.

Jim Across The Hall just came in for help. I went over and his TV was dead again. But, this time, it was just a matter of turning it on. All fixed and he's happy.

Time to get dressed. Christian said he'd text me when he was leaving the car place.

Name: Oneinist, or One (they/them)

Age: Middle aged

I mostly post about: So far I've posted general journals, a bit of poetry, and some prompts from the [community profile] snowflake_challenge. I've posted in English and Japanese. I'm still figuring out what I want to post about. I have a Naruto/KKIR fandom Tumblr, but I haven't decided to what extent I'll be posting fannish content here yet. I feel like I might post thoughts on fandom? Or at least I would like to. I'll find an excuse to turn anything into a bingo board.

My hobbies are: I have too many hobbies, and I tend to cycle through them, but I also have some core ones like watching anime, reading Japanese BL manga and listening to BLCDs, cooking, baking, writing, journaling, drawing and crafting. My latest hyper-fixation is Obsidian (note organizing software), and along with it HTML and CSS. The intensity of it varies and sometimes I take breaks or have slumps from my main ones too.

My fandoms are: I'm only active in the Naruto/Boruto fandom, but I still enjoy a variety of fandoms/media. As an example, love Star Trek Voyager and Natsume Book of Friends too; I just haven't created anything for either. I grew up on 90s Sailor Moon anime, so that one holds a special place in my heart.

I'm looking to meet people who: Post about a mix of things that we both have in common and don't have in common, it doesn't have to be fandom related, and it's not a requirement to share fandoms. I enjoy reading about everyday life around the world, hobbies, thoughts and feelings. I'm hoping to build relationships slowly and steadily.

My posting schedule tends to be: I've sort of gotten into the habit of doing the [community profile] justcreate check-in on Mondays, and at the same time I catch up on reading and commenting. I also post then if I'm feeling inspired. That being said, I don't want to stress myself out by trying to explicitly keep some sort of schedule.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: If you write mainly about Christianity from a practicing Christian perspective we are likely not a good match. I'm fine with more cultural or secularized aspects of Christianity like Christmas for example (I decorate extensively myself).

Before adding me, you should know: English is not my first language, and sometimes I misunderstand. I'm sure we can work it out though. I can also be a bit bad at asking questions (I process a lot through association, so my mind slips into "that reminds me of the time I..." as a way of connecting when I've read something). In all languages I write in, I struggle with missing letters and spelling. Because of that, I'm quite self-conscious about my writing, and I can only ask for a bit of patience and grace. My energy levels vary throughout the day as well as the year, and if I go from very chatty to not that chatty, it's me and not you.

Seed Starting

Finally started some seeds this past weekend! A little later than I intended, but given that last year I started them a whole 2 months sooner than I ought to have, I'll take it as a win. More seeds than I had realized need to be stratified first, so those are now chilling in the fridge and I'll get them in pots next month instead.

I'm hoping this week it'll be warm enough out that I can get some compost into the garden so it's all prepped when plants are ready to go in. We've already had crocuses and daffodils up for a few weeks, but we also had a frost this morning, so it's still a little early for most things. Unpredictable March! I've got big plans for some of the space this year, but we'll see how much I actually manage to get done. So far I'm mostly working on clearing out the cabinets so I have space for harvests later in the season. I made some tincture blends on Saturday to consolidate some jars, and used up some oils for salve yesterday. I'll have to spend a lot of time over the next couple of months drinking tea to work through my stash of dried herbs. There are worse fates!

The community garden has gotten started too, and I spent some time there today weeding and clearing out dead plants. I took an extra parsley and some stray borage home with me. I've never gotten borage to take in my garden, but I've tried putting it in a different location this time and maybe it'll settle in.

So, I'm bed bound right? Which means I can't walk or stand appropriately. It takes a lot of effort for me to stand and I can only do it seconds at a time. They told me I had a testing policy violation, revoked my rights to test online at home and keep telling me I have to go to an online testing center. I do not have the means to do so. I'm completely and utterly without hope. I feel so defeated. I can't take my tests now and I'll never go to college unless I get money to pay for my courses without getting a g.e.d.

Does anyone know of ways to go to free college without a highschool diploma or g.e.d? Someone has to know.
